This species was named after me, Captain Randy Rivera, for discovering the remarkable Tortuga Terrace fauna during my commercial lobster fishing operations aboard the F/V AVA PILAR and for donating the type specimens used in its scientific description.

This specimen was personally collected by me in February 2026 from a baited lobster trap set in 200–240 feet off the Dry Tortugas and was personally identified by Dr. Edward J. Petuch.

As described by Petuch and Berschauer (2026), Fasciolaria riverai is characterized by its elongated fusiform shape, elevated protracted spire, long slender siphonal canal, and highly polished shell. Distinctive beaded sutural cords, intricate spiral sculpture, and the graceful lightweight profile separate this species from other Gulf True Tulips.

This specimen exhibits outstanding cream and reddish-brown patterning with broad irregular flammules and bands covering the body whorl. The elevated spire is beautifully preserved, and the elongated siphonal canal gives the shell the elegant proportions that define the species. The operculum is present, adding to the desirability of this collector specimen.

Condition

This is an excellent collector-quality specimen with exceptional color and pattern. The shell retains excellent gloss and displays all of the characteristics expected of this recently described species. The operculum is present and fits nicely within the aperture. Some sponge holes are present and siphon and outer lip show only minor trap wear consistent with commercial collection. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and accurately represent the specimen being offered.

Specimen Data

Family: Fasciolariidae
Species: Fasciolaria riverai Petuch & Berschauer, 2026
Location: Dry Tortugas, Florida
Collection Method: Personally collected in baited commercial lobster traps set in 200–240 feet of water aboard the F/V AVA PILAR.
Collection Date: February 2026
Collector: Captain Randy Rivera
Identification: Personally identified by Dr. Edward J.
