Exceptional Scaphella mercedesae Petuch & Berschauer, 2026 displaying the bold checkered pattern, elongated form, and polished porcelain-like finish that define this spectacular recently described deep-water volute from the Tortuga Terrace fauna.
This specimen exhibits the classic features noted in the original description, including the proportionally narrow elongated shell, elevated protracted spire, rounded sloping shoulder, and rows of evenly spaced dark chestnut-brown rectangular markings arranged in a striking checkerboard pattern over a bright white base. The large elongated blotches along the subsutural area are especially attractive on this specimen and create exceptional visual contrast against the glossy body whorl.
The shell retains a beautiful smooth polished surface with excellent symmetry and a clean pale yellow interior aperture. The dark orange protoconch and anterior fasciole remain well preserved, adding additional contrast and eye appeal. A very elegant specimen of one of the newest and most desirable western Atlantic volutes currently entering the collector market.
Personally collected by me during commercial lobstering operations aboard the F/V AVA PILAR using baited lobster traps set in 260–300 feet on the famed Tortuga Terrace west of the Dry Tortugas, Florida. Specimens of this species remain scarce and highly sought after due to their restricted deep-water habitat and limited availability.
A beautiful modern volute and an important representative of this newly described Dry Tortugas species.
