Spondylus tenuis – 81.2 mm – Panama City Beach, FL

Personally collected by Doug Thompson while scuba diving off Panama City Beach, Florida, this exceptional Spondylus tenuis displays a dramatic deep crimson-red upper valve contrasted by creamy white lower valve extensions and impressive foliated spines. Larger specimens with this level of coloration and spine development are highly sought after by collectors of Western Atlantic thorny oysters.

The upper valve exhibits rich reddish-burgundy coloration with strong radial sculpture and numerous elongated foliated spines extending from the shell margin. The specimen presents excellent visual contrast between the dark upper valve and the lighter cream-colored lower valve, creating a striking display piece. The dense ornamentation and mature growth make this an outstanding representative of the species.
